The Secret Life of Undersea Cables: From Valentia’s First Transatlantic Message to a Global Deep Sea Fibre-Optic Network That Can Sense Our Changing Planet

Presented by speaker Prof. Anthony Sladen from Geoazur France

Join us in the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Basement, 63 Merrion Square S, Dublin 2, D02 X338 on Tuesday 20th October at 7 p.m.

In 1858, a cable laid from Valentia Island, County Kerry, carried the first message across the Atlantic. Laying it also forced scientists to map and sample the deep ocean for the first time, revealing that life existed in the abyss and helping give birth to modern oceanography.

Since then, observing the seafloor has demanded decades of intense effort, from ship-deployed instruments to dedicated cabled observatories. Yet these remain costly and sparse, and most of the ocean floor is still unobserved.

Now, the cables that first revealed the deep are learning to listen to it. With recent progress in photonics, a single optical fibre can to turned into thousands of virtual sensors spaced metres apart. The telecom cables crossing our oceans are turning into instruments that can detect earthquakes and tsunamis, track waves and deep sea currents, and hear whales and passing ships. This talk explores how this revolution is opening a new window onto the deep sea.
