IGA Lecture: John Hussey – Granite in Dublin’s buildings, the Blessington connection

John Hussey
Granite has been used in the buildings of Dublin since the early 1700s. Much of this granite came from quarries around the Blessington area of Co. Wicklow. John Hussey’s talk will look at the practicalities of the business rather than its geology, focusing on the development of the industry from 1700 onwards, the sequence of granite quarries in use and their owners, the transport system and routes used to move the stone to Dublin and a selection of Dublin’s granite buildings.
John Hussey is a Civil and Environmental Engineer who has researched the history of the Wicklow granite quarries over many years. His book, Wicklow Granite – a history of quarrying at Ballyknockan, Golden Hill, Threecastles & Woodend is in preparation.
