Calling all photographers, particularly amateur! Why not head out into the outdoors and snap some gorgeous landscapes in your area. Then enter the annual landscape/geological photo competition run by Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) – the Du Noyer Photographic Competition. The competition, organised in conjunction with the Irish Geological Association (www.geology.ie), is named after George Victor Du Noyer (1817 – 1869), a skilled field artist who worked from 1847 to 1869 with a youthful GSI and had a tendency to add illustrations to the geological maps on which he worked. His numerous sketches and pictures, with their combination of artistic skill and technical accuracy, were the “field photographs” of their day. This competition seeks to encourage the same blend of artistic and scientific skills through the medium of photography. The closing date for receipt of entries for the 2012 Du Noyer Photo Competition has been extended to Friday 23rd November. This year the competition has a prize fund of €500 and it accepts images of geological interest taken either in Ireland or overseas. The lucky winners will be notified by e-mail and invited to attend an awards ceremony and exhibition in the Dublin offices of GSI on December 14.   Prizes will be awarded as follows Irish category 1st - € 250 2nd - € 100 3rd - €  50 Foreign category winner - € 100   Entries can only be accepted by e-mail and sent to: DuNoyerPhotoCompetition@gmail.com For details on how to enter click here.
