Dear Member,
Landslides! We don't normally think of these dramatic events - occasionally grading into disasters - as happening in Ireland. But they do. And next Wednesday (October 29th, at 6:30 pm in the Geological Survey of Ireland in Beggars Bush, Dublin 2), Charise McKeon of the Geological Survey will tell us of Ireland's past, present and future landslides. This promises to be an eye-opening lecture and may shatter a few illusions that we are not a geologically active country.
Coffee and biscuits etc will be available from 6:00 pm in the GSI.
See you there.
Charise's Abstract:
The Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) has shown leadership in developing an understanding of the spatial and temporal distribution of landslides in Ireland. GSI has expended substantial resources (and gained much expertise) on this topic over the last 10 years. The foundation for this work was developed through the Landslides in Ireland publication and its recommendations, a publication developed by the Irish Landslide Working Group (ILWG). These recommendations include the aspiration to develop a risk assessment methodology for Ireland based on international best practice. This talk outlines the development of the National Landslide Database, a national inventory of landslide events which has under pinned the development of a landslide susceptibility mapping model for Ireland. The importance of landslides and planning and future hazard mapping is also demonstrated.
